Chinnamasta is among the most fearsome and luminous of the Tantrik Mahavidyas, the self-decapitated goddess who holds her own severed head in one hand while two streams of blood arc from her neck to feed her attendants and her own open mouth. In the Shakta Tantras she is the living revelation of Prana and Apana, the ascending and descending life forces that sustain the body, shown here as the two streams that nourish even as they flow from sacrifice. She stands upon the copulating forms of Rati and Kama, the goddess of desire and the god of love, signifying that she has transcended the pull of Kama entirely, her awareness rooted in the absolute beyond pleasure and pain. Her self-decapitation is not violence but the supreme act of Tantrik renunciation, the severing of the ego-mind from the body of pure awareness. To meditate upon Chinnamasta is to confront the most radical truth of the Tantrik path: that liberation is not found by adding to the self but by the fearless offering of the self back to its source.
