Mukhalinga

The Mukhalinga is one of the most sacred and ancient forms of Shiva worship, the point where the formless and the formed meet in perfect union. The Linga itself is the axis of the cosmos, the pillar of pure consciousness that has neither beginning nor end, and upon its surface here emerges the serene face of Shiva, Sadashiva, the eternal one, his eyes half closed in the bliss of inner absorption, the third eye resting between his brows like a dormant sun. He is not separate from the Linga; he is its awareness looking back at the devotee, the formless recognising itself through form.

Coiled around the base of the Yoni Pitha and rising in a crown of five luminous heads above is Vasuki, the great serpent lord, his jewelled eyes gleaming with the cold fire of awakened Kundalini. The serpent does not threaten; it guards and consecrates, for in the Shaiva tradition the Naga is the living symbol of the primal energy that sleeps coiled at the root of existence and rises, when awakened, to merge with the infinite sky of Shiva consciousness. The entire image glows with the cool luminescence of deep water and moonstone, set against the golden splendour of a celestial throne. To meditate upon this Mukhalinga is to feel the spine become the axis of the world, the breath slow to the rhythm of eternity, and the gaze of Shiva dissolve every boundary between the worshipper and the worshipped.
